The Terrace at Mission Hill: Elevated Dining Above the Vines

Mission Hill Family Estate has long loomed over West Kelowna like the Versailles of the Valley. Anchored by a dramatic 12-story bell tower designed by Olson Kundig and underground cellars blasted directly from volcanic rock, the estate is a monument to British Columbia’s viticultural ambition.

That towering ambition extends seamlessly to The Terrace.

Long celebrated as a premier fine-dining destination, the open-air pavilion overlooks rows of Pinot Noir and the sweeping expanse of Okanagan Lake. Kicking off a birthday getaway with my dining companion Maggi (@magmei), the $75 two-course lunch with a $20 enhanced wine pairing proved that if Michelin inspectors ever venture into the Okanagan, this dining room should be their first stop.

The Terrace at Mission Hill Family Estate

Guided by our impeccably attentive server, Ben, an Okanagan native, the meal unfolded as a masterclass in regional dining under Executive Chef Patrick Gayler. The meal began with BC mushrooms on Sprout Sourdough, a playful dish centered around a fondue-style dip where miso umami beautifully grounded the earthy mushrooms. It found a partner in the Terroir Collection Rosé; crafted from Oregon grapes following the catastrophic 2024 local winter freeze, it lacked the crisp brightness from the previous Border Vista version but still married well with the plate. Across the table, the Okanagan Heirloom Tomatoes shined alongside a vibrant Terroir Collection Sauvignon Blanc utilizing borrowed New Zealand grapes that exploded with passion fruit, lime, and bold florals.

The seafood course arrived as Pan-Seared Scallops studded with estate chorizo, a delicate oceanic bite that stood up flawlessly to Legacy Collection Chardonnay “Perpetua” 2023, although with a new label. Having happily enjoyed over a dozen bottles of Perpetua in the past, I can confidently say this vintage remains just as phenomenal.

Yet, the undisputed star of the menu was the Pan-Seared Duck Breast basted with thyme. A heavy dry brine yielded a deeply savory, remarkably bouncy texture that played brilliantly against the succulent firmness of toasted herb spaetzle and the silky finish of fresh chanterelles. The duck found its ultimate match in the restaurant-exclusive 2021 Terroir Collection Cabernet Franc, a stunning local pour proving that Cabernet Franc is the new powerhouse red of the Okanagan.

The afternoon concluded with a decadent Stave-Smoked Dark Chocolate Cake, complete with a birthday candle. The true revelation on the dessert plate, however, was an outrageously refreshing grape must ice cream – a brilliant, terroir-driven flavor concept that leaves you wondering why every winery restaurant isn’t attempting to replicate it.

When a kitchen understands its local ingredients as deeply as Chef Gayler’s team does, and pairs them with wines of winemaker Taylor Whetan’s caliber, the result is a lasting education in modern winery gastronomy.
