Zakkushi Charcoal Grill

I was super excited to go to Zakkushi as I had, for quite some time, been picturing myself visiting an authentic Yakitori joint like how my heroes Anthony Boudain and David Chang did on their shows. It is one of those great traditional food cultures that always stays around. When there is so much care and effort put into such a small serving of food, you feel special.

Although I really wanted to sit at the bar and watch the chef turning and flipping and working his magic into those Yakitori on sticks, we were lucky to even get a table shortly after we arrived. I supposed most people in downtown were still at the beach enjoying the Summer Solstice!

The girls ordered the Zakkushi Set ($9.50), it was quite a beautiful display of a variety of proteins on skewer sticks: Umeshiso Yaki (chicken with sour plum on shiso leaf), P Toro (pork), Oropon Beef (with grated Daikon and Ponzu Sauce), and Asparagus Maki (with bacon). The girls obviously had ordered this more than once and it was their Favourite.

I decided to indulge myself with their Premium Set ($19.20), with a list of amazing proteins – Prime Rib, Kobe Tsukune (meat balls), Organic Chicken Momo (with sea salt), Premium Beef Tongue, and Duck Breast. Impeccable doneness on the latter 3, especially the beef order valsartan online without a prescription tonuge – a perfect medium rare, slightly pink when I bit into it and it was incredibly moist but still had that little crunch. It was my first time having duck on a skewer stick, and it was quite interesting. The seasoning was very minimal, but the charcoal flavour was good enough to complement the gaminess. Kobe Tsukune sounded fancy – it tasted good like a premium beef patty but it didn’t wow me.

And I also ordered an extra skewer of Hamachi Yakitori ($3.20). As I had never eaten Hamachi (yellowtail) cooked, I was curious about how it would turn out. Since Hamachi is such an oily fish, and the fish oil made it so tasty after it was chargrilled. And the house teriyaki sauce was subtle but gave the fish such a beautiful glow and another pleasing dimension on my palate.

Finally I have mention the sake special. A 300ml serving of Hito Koishi from Ishikawa, Japan is only $12.80. And the sake was refreshing and very palatable, a terrific complement to the Yakitori experience.
