I was invited to\u00a0VanFoodster<\/a>‘s latest edition of Tasting Plates<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0beautiful city of\u00a0\u00a0Port Moody<\/a>. As much as I was excited to visit the\u00a0‘City of Arts’, I was looking forward to check out the local vibrant food scene and the flourishing wave of microbreweries. \u00a0As a bonus to this foodie adventure, \u00a0I even had a chance to take\u00a0the West Coast Express train for the first time with my buddy Hanson (Nosh and Nibble<\/a>). \u00a0A relaxing\u00a025-minute ride later, we were convinced that Port Moody is quite accessible from downtown Vancouver. With the new Evergreen\u00a0skytrain line launching\u00a0soon, Port Moody will definitely become a bigger attraction for visitors and new residents.<\/p>\n

It was such a gorgeous\u00a0early evening\u00a0in the fall. As we were\u00a0loving the sun and the blue sky, we took\u00a0a nice stroll towards the city centre.<\/p>\n

Our first stop\u00a0Gabi & Jules<\/strong><\/a>, a local bakery was merely 10 – 15 minutes walk away from the train station. \u00a0They are known for the\u00a0delectable bake goods such as the Peach and Strawberry<\/strong>\u00a0and the Raspberry Rhubarb<\/strong> pie, which were both on\u00a0the tasting menu for the evening. And we get to comes with a cup of complimentary cafe latte or tea. It was definitely the much needed sugar and caffeine fix for us after\u00a0a long day at\u00a0work . \u00a0I particularly enjoyed the nice little spice-up touch of ginger in my peach and strawberry pie.<\/p>\n

The next 2 destinations are right next to each other at the corner of Moody Street and St. Johns Street.<\/p>\n

First, we stopped at\u00a0Meat Craft Urban Butchery<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for a taste of their house-made mini smokies, featuring the Romanian<\/strong>, Moody Ale<\/strong>\u00a0and Yellow Dog<\/strong>. The latter two were actually made with the local craft beers so that the sausage meat remains moist after being cooked. It’s great to see the butchery trying to utilize local free range and ethically raised meat from\u00a0the community.<\/p>\n

Around the corner from the butchery, Spacca Napoli Pizzeria<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is the neighborhood\u00a0gem that offers a great selection of Napoli style pizzas, pasta dishes and other Italian specialties. \u00a0The dining room is tastefully designed with a mix of rustic and chic elements. \u00a0With the owner’s Italian mother running the kitchen and the great\u00a0looking pizza pies coming out of a massive wood burning, we enjoyed both the food and the warm welcoming ambiance. \u00a0The tasting bites of the authentic Napoli taste were: \u00a0the house-made Meat Balls<\/strong>, Frittelle<\/strong>, Rigatoni Bolognese<\/strong>, and a slice of Margherita\u00a0<\/strong>Pizza.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Next we walked over to\u00a0Rocky Point Park and visited a popular spot among the locals: Rocky Point Ice Cream<\/a><\/strong>. We were greeted with\u00a0a flight of ice cream treats, featuring a mini Sweet Georgia Brown <\/strong>sundae, a Strawberry Ice Cream<\/strong> topped with Balsamic Reduction and Fresh Basil<\/strong>, and a mini Ginger-Molasses and Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream Sandwich<\/strong>. It was great to see\u00a0the ice cream maker has brought\u00a0the\u00a0popular frozen sweet treat to a whole new gourmet level.<\/p>\n

After the delicious ice cream, we moved on to another highly anticipated part of the event – beer tasting. \u00a0Port Moody has welcomed a new bloom of microbrewery scene the last couple years. Just to name a few in the area – Moody Ales, The Parkside Brewery, Yellow Dog Brewing, and Twin Sails Brewing. \u00a0And they have become quite active in the local craft beer events and festivities, \u00a0and established their names among the beer lovers.<\/p>\n

The Tasting Plates map brought us to The Parkside Brewery<\/a><\/strong> first, and we were served the Parkbench Flight<\/strong> of 4 \u00a0chosen from the 5 different beers\u00a0– Dawn Pilsner<\/strong>, Dusk Pale Ale<\/strong>, Graffiti IPA<\/strong>, Murray Mild<\/strong> and Bearegarde Blueberry Wit<\/strong>. \u00a0While I was enjoying a hoppy and strong flavoured Graffiti IPA, I also quite like the fruity tone from the Blueberry Wit.<\/p>\n

At the last stop, we were welcomed with another flight of craft beers at Moody Ales. The tasting choices were: Vienna Lager<\/strong>, Happy Brown Ale<\/strong>, Affable IPA<\/strong>, Sociable Pale Ale<\/strong>, and BC Fresh-Hopped Red Ale<\/strong>. My favourite were Vienna Lager and the Red Ale, both with beautiful dark honey colour and rich in flavours.<\/p>\n
