{"id":8723,"date":"2016-09-07T10:00:09","date_gmt":"2016-09-07T18:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/?p=8723"},"modified":"2016-09-09T07:05:59","modified_gmt":"2016-09-09T15:05:59","slug":"salchicha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/salchicha\/","title":{"rendered":"A Taste of North African and Middle East &#8211; Salchicha Meat Bar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although <strong>Ami Cohen<\/strong>, the owner of <strong>Salchicha Meat Bar<\/strong> on the ever-lively Granville street, is originally from Morocco where his mother was a chef, he and his Yemenite wife for a long time were living in Israel, where different cuisines\u00a0and flavours has influenced his cooking.<\/p>\n<p>At Salchicha&#8217;s media dinner, we could see a fusion menu that would take us to a culinary journey from the Middle East to the Mediterranean, with a great variety of meat products and dishes, such as cured meats, home-made sausages, smoked chicken, beef kebabs and many more.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8772\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8772\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-108.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8772 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-108.jpeg\" alt=\"Salchicha Meat Bar\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-108.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-108-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-108-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Salchicha Meat Bar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was quite fond of the interiors, which were rustic but elegant with exotic touches of the owner&#8217;s culture, and all were designed by chef Cohen himself. I think they could use a little bit more salt and pepper to brighten up from the\u00a0subtlety. \u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Along with the platter, some\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Focaccia<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> bread freshly baked in-house was served with 3 different types of dips:\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Harrisa, Sahuog<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0and<\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0Tahini<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> ($6 for the bread and 3 dips). \u00a0The bread crust\u00a0is\u00a0hearty but not hard, \u00a0the inside is soft but still has a friendly texture to chew on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8762\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8762\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-98.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8762 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-98.jpeg\" alt=\"Salada Platter\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-98.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-98-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-98-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8762\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Salada Platter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The \u00a0<strong>Beef Kebab<\/strong> ($13) was served on cinnamon sticks, \u00a0but I felt that\u00a0the burned sticks didn&#8217;t \u00a0do much to the dish. I could taste that the beef was fresh had a nice charred flavour to it, but it was a bit dry and could use a tab bit more of seasoning. However the rustic mashed potato underneath was quite tasty.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8764\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8764\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-100.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8764 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-100.jpeg\" alt=\"Beef Kebab\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-100.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-100-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-100-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beef Kebab<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <strong>Chicken Skewers<\/strong> ($8) came with 2 skewers and a house-made chipolata mayo. The sauce was nicely made but the chicken breast used on the skewers got dry quickly if they were not eaten immediately. Maybe using chicken thigh could be a bit better? I do like the nice touch of adding fresh tomato slices on the side, and properly seasoned. \u00a0Overall I found whole dish a little underwhelming\u00a0for the amazing story behind the restaurant.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8768\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8768\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-104.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8768 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-104.jpeg\" alt=\"Chicken Skewers\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-104.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-104-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-104-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8768\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chicken Skewers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <strong>Couscous Maraguez<\/strong> ($14) is a Moroccan style stew sitting on a bed of couscous, and topped with a couple Maragues sausages. \u00a0The stew was cooked with Harissa sauce and the sausages  were made with fresh Alberta Lamb. I really like the flavour combination and its visual appeal, as well as the spices in the couscous, \u00a0but the sausages and the source are\u00a0a lot less spicy than I expected. \u00a0Overall it was a good dish as all the components were nicely prepared, but it definitely could be a little bolder!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8763\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8763\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-99.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8763 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-99.jpeg\" alt=\"Couscous Maraguez\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-99.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-99-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-99-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8763\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Couscous Maraguez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <strong>Shakshouka Maraguez<\/strong> ($13) definitely looked familiar\u00a0when it came as I&#8217;d had the same dish at Cafe Medina.\u00a0A couple Maragues sausages and a coupel poached eggs were sitting in a spicy tomato sauce on a sizzling hot cast iron pan. \u00a0 The flavours are bolder with tomato, chili, and onion in the sauce and the richness of the runny egg yolk definitely added richness to the sauce. The sausages were a little dry however. But for me the spiciness\u00a0could be a little more intense.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8769\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8769\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-105.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8769 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-105.jpeg\" alt=\"Shakshouka Maraguez\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-105.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-105-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.pickydiners.com\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-105-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8769\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shakshouka Maraguez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was interesting to see an <strong>Antipasti platter<\/strong> ($7), and I appreciate that the chef was thoughtful to add more vegetables to the meat-centric dishes. While seeing the traditional Italian Antipasti vegetables like eggplant, zucchini and bell pepper \u00a0on the plate, I wasn&#8217;t sure about the carrot and yam, which are quite unconventional with their crunchiness. I&#8217;m sure some people will like the texture contrast in their food and I often do so in a lot of dishes, but for Antipasti I really prefer it soft, which is much better for eating with bread and deli meats. But that&#8217;s just my personal preference. It looks like a pudding but the texture is\u00a0a little denser. When it comes to dishes that are comparable to Cafe Medina or Jam Jar, I definitely expect more spices and flavour combinations from Salchicha to stand out more.<\/p>\n<p>* All food and beverages in this review were complimentary.
