Ham & Eggman’s was founded almost one year ago. It was certainly good news to the neighborhood where classic break and brunch spots are in shortage. The area of Renfrew-Collingwood is also known for a big Chinese community, which explains why the new restaurant is sharing the same block with a few Chinese restaurants. But the beautiful interior with tasteful modern design definitely makes the place stand out on the block.<\/p>\n

It’s probably not likely for me to discover this place for brunch as I tend to find spots between Downtown and Richmond. But I’m glad the restaurant invited us to try the food so that we can share the experience with the local audience. Yes, I was with my foodie family, a group of like-minded food bloggers who does meet-up meal monthly. I would like to specify such special occasions from now on so that you would likely read about the reviewed restaurant through all my other blogger friends including Sherman<\/a>, Areta<\/a>, Diana<\/a>, Hanson<\/a>, Joyce<\/a>, and Maggi<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The dishes that worked for me include the Chicken & Waffle\u00a0<\/strong>($18), with some beautiful golden fried chicken skin and a generous serving of fresh fruits, the Pork Belly Hash\u00a0<\/strong>($16),\u00a0 with the crispiness on the pork belly truly impressed, and the Wild Mushroom Benedict <\/strong>($16)\u00a0with a kick-ass hollandaise sauce. But the most impressive was the Sweet Oatmeal\u00a0<\/strong>($13), surprisingly. The really nailed the temperature and the texture. I could taste every single grain but it all went down so smoothly. Although a sweet dish, it is just as delicious and comforting as an excellent risotto dish.<\/p>\n

Both the Shakshuka<\/strong> ($15), the Mexican Scrambles<\/strong> ($15), and the Lomo Saltado Hash<\/strong> ($16) are hearty dishes with a generous portion,\u00a0 but the exotic flavours could be a lot bolder, not sure if they have reduced the spice level just to meet the local taste.\u00a0 And the slices of Peruvian style steak in Lomo Saltado were slightly overcooked. The Waffles<\/strong> ($14) would be least memorable for the taste but I remember it as pricey because it’s just waffles.<\/p>\n

Final thoughts<\/h3>\n

The brunch dishes are good and hearty. The staples such as Chicken & Waffle, Pork Belly Hash, and Wild Mushroom Benedict are solid and satisfying. The most memorable dish for me was the Sweet Oatmeal, which has achieved the same delicious and comforting level for me as a great risotto dish. This is incredible. The price is a bit high for East Van in my opinion. I understand they have a very generous portion, but they can well justify it with add-ons instead of making all the plates so big. I would be much happier if everything is $2 less.\u00a0 \u00a0Nevertheless, Ham & Eggman is a very decent neighbour breakfast and brunch destination, and terrific news for folks who love comfort food in the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n
