Finally at visit #3, I get to try the dosa at Davie Dosa Company. The first time when I came here, I was\u00a0visiting the South Indian restaurant for the 2018 Pizza Palooza by Vancouver Foodster<\/a>, where I sampled the Indian pizza made with the same gluten free dough for dosa. The second time wasn’t a real visit technically, but was a takeout through Ubereats, when I ordered their signature curry lamb dish<\/a>\u00a0with basmati rice.\u00a0 But today, here I am with a friend for the Mojito Challenge<\/a>. We tasted the blueberry mojito that eventually wo the 2nd place in the challenge, but also their signature dosa dishes.<\/p>\n

I was greeted by the restaurant’s owner and manager, Sharv, a veteran in the hospitality and restaurant industry, with 15 years of service at Vancouver Convention Centre and eventually holding the position of beverage manager. We can all imagine how happy he is now,\u00a0 having grasped the the opportunity running a restaurant, and presenting everyone the best of his hometown flavours from Southern India.\u00a0 And he has a bag of tricks behind that full bar to make the tasting experience even better.<\/p>\n

The Blueberry Mojito<\/strong>\u00a0($10) exhibits such a unique sweet flavour and makes the minty cocktail even more refreshing.\u00a0 Sharv insists on using the local BC blueberries as the quality makes such a different in the taste of the drink.<\/p>\n

Here comes the\u00a0Curry Lamb Dosa<\/strong> ($14). Dosa rather looks like a giant crepe but more delicate in colour and thickness. I actually prefer it over naan bread which could be pretty doughy sometimes. The dosa here is light, fluffy, but still substantial enough to carry the flavour of the fillings. My friend comes from Japan and it was his time trying Indian curry in Vancouver. He was genuinely impressed by how flavourful it was. To be honest, I love Japanese curry but never consider it as the real curry. The curry here at Davie Dosa is the real deal, built with numerous spices for the bold and sophisticated flavours, and it has the right amount of heat that I can handle. So maybe I should ask for a spicier curry next time!\u00a0The Blueberry Mojito turns out to be a great complement to the curry – what a bonus!<\/p>\n

For desserts, we have the Pistachio Kulfi<\/strong>($5). Kulfi is a frozen dairy dessert from India, or you can call it “traditional Indian Ice Cream”, which has been around for almost 500 years. It was incredibly creamy and luscious, and the pistachio crumbs are a nice touch for some contrast in texture.\u00a0\u00a0The frozen treat goes well with the Blueberry cocktail too, but if you prefer something non-alcoholic, get the aromatic house-made chai and put a comforting end to the flavourful meal.<\/p>\n

Final thoughts<\/h3>\n

I’m glad to have discovered dosa, a great gluten-free choice, something I would now prefer over naan bread or basmati rice when I go for Indian curry dishes. The curry here is incredibly flavourful, definitely one of the best in downtown for me.<\/p>\n
